Laboratory Centrifuges are primarily used for testing liquids and substances such as blood in medical and clinical trials. The process, otherwise known as centrifugation, involves the use of centrifugal forces to separate the liquids and mixtures. Centrifugation is commonly used in medical science, laboratory testing and biomedical research.
The process works by creating centrifugal force, within a Laboratory Centrifuge, through spinning the samples around a gravitational focus/axis, thus causing force within the mixture, otherwise known as G-force. More dense components within the mixture therefore move away from the axis point, towards the end of the test tube, whilst the less dense components move towards the axis point, causing separation.
By increasing the speed of the rotational mass the separation process time can be increased or decreased depending on the requirements of the experiment. The speed of the rotational mass is measured in RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) The more dense material deposited at the bottom is also known as the precipitate. The remaining mixture is called the supernate and can be extracted using a pipette or decanted without disturbing the precipate.
Once separated the mixtures can be analysed and tested for medical research or application as neccessary.
